British South Africa Zulu War medal with 1879 Bar.

The South Africa Medal (1880), often referred to as the Zulu War Medal, was instituted in 1880 and awarded to members of the British Army & Colonial Volunteers who were involved in a series of South African tribal wars in South Africa between 1877 and 1879, most notably for the Zulu War of 1879.

The Zulu War of 1879 is remembered notably for the catastrophic defeat of the British Army at the Battle of Islandlwana and subsequent heroic Defence of Rorkes Drift. Participants in this campaign, including those present at Islandlwana and Rorkes Drift, were entitled to the '1879' clasp which was attached to the medal ribbon.
