WW2 German Award of the 5th Don Cossack Regiment- ORIGINAL QUALITY

In October 1941 an entire Cossack regiment with all its officers, including its commander Colonel Kononov, deserted from the Red Army and offered their services to the Germans. The 5th Don Cossack Cavalry Regiment was the first completely Russian unit, with its own officers, to fight for the Germans

The 5th Don Cossack Regiment and the 2nd Siberian Cossacks Regiment both had their own regimental crosses. These are not decorations as such but rather Regimental insignias. However, in the German armed forces they took on the semblance of a campaign award or tradition badge.

This perfect example of the 5th Don Cossack badge is die struck in aluminum with a painted finish. It has the correct inset brass brooch pin. The obverse bears the Regimental designation and date it was founded together with the name KONONOV in Cyrillic.
